Everyone had so much fun making their own Florida native WILDFLOWER BOMB.  Spreading seeds so more flowers will grow.

Thanks to the Healthy 22nd St Garden Steps program and thanks to Dee, one of our Garden Coaches and our friend, Nathalie Marcelin.

First Birthday Celebration - Healthy 22nd Street Demonstration Garden

12/4/2021

Picture
Our Healthy 22nd Street community of gardeners attended a celebration of the anniversary of the installation of our demonstration garden.
  • There are now 19 East Tampa residents who have their own Front Yard Garden: a colorful half barrel self-wicking garden with a Healthy 22nd Street sign.
  • These community partners have 2 gardens each: Tampa Police Dept, Division 3; Advent Health, C. Blythe Andrews, Jr. Library, Woodson K-8 school, H.O.P.E. Learning Center.  There are 8 raised garden beds at Middleton High School for their school and community garden.
  • There are over 10 residents on the waiting list for their own Front Yard Garden.

Let's support our pollinators!

From L-R: Native Salvia; milkweed; blanket flower (galardia).
These plants will support butterflies.  Here are some that the bees love:

From L-R: Bidens alba; sunflower; lavender.

There are bugs in my garden!

3/29/2021

Thanks to Jackie and Sonia from the Extension office for providing information about "Good Bugs" and "Bad Bugs".  Three common beneficial insects are : Lady bugs, predatory stink bugs ( with pointy "shoulders"), and parasitic wasps.  These insects eat other harmful insects.
Some commonly seen harmful insects are: aphids, stink bugs, harlequin bugs and lubbers.

Health from the Garden

Thank you to Kimberly Bragg-Armatrout, Hillsborough Extension, for providing information on all of the nutrition we get from our gardens.  She encouraged us to include a “rainbow” of colors of fruit and vegetables in our diet. Not only does this add to the visual appeal of your plate but it increases the amount and variety of vitamins, minerals, and protective plant compounds you’re consuming .  For more information go to https://fruitsandveggies.org/stories/iv-for-072010-alicia-brown/

Our 22nd Street Garden is demonstrating that we can grow lots of good food in a small space.  So far we have harvested collards, kale, lettuce, broccoli, parsley, and Swiss Chard.

But more than that!!  This demonstration garden has inspired others to get one of these half-barrel gardens in their front yard.

The large half-barrels are constructed to have a water reservoir at the bottom so that the soil remains moist. Each Front Yard Garden has a colorful design painted on it and a colorful sign installed.
